From the streets of Jakarta, Indonesia to the mountains of Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand, eight nations in the South East Asian gateway to the Orient have opened the door for Earth Hour to continue its relay of hope around the world.
Jakarta, Indonesia:Indonesia has plunged into darkness for Earth Hour with the National Monument, Yogja Monument, Pemuda Statute and Arjuna Wiwaha Waterfall among the major Indonesian icons flicking the switch for climate change. Famous musicians Nugie and Katon Bagaskara, the official Earth Hour Ambassadors for Indonesia, recorded a song for the global initiative titled Jika Bumi Bisa Bicara - literally meaning “If the Earth Could Talk”.
Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei:Citizens of Brunei observed ten minutes silence upon switching off the lights for their inaugural Earth Hour. They used this time to reflect on and experience the sense of darkness and tranquillity at their official event at Kampong Ayer Cultural and Tourism Gallery. Brunei artist Fakhrul Razi performed the official Earth Hour song “Experience”, which was chosen because the lyrics referred to ocean, beaches, waves and love which would remind people of the wonders of nature.
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia:The beautiful lights of the six level shopping mall Suria KLCC, which usually light up the night sky in Kuala Lumpur, plunged into darkness in a dramatic display of action on climate change. IOI Boulevard in Bandar Puchong Jaya was host to an unplugged Earth show which entertained the public and provided a platform for citizens of Malaysia to voice their determination for action on climate change.
Manila, Philippines:More than 1000 cities, towns and municipalities in The Philippines have taken part in Earth Hour, the largest number of any country or territory participating in Earth Hour this year. This amazing show of support for Earth Hour was complimented by some of the countries most iconic landmarks switching off as well, including Manila Cathedral, Fort Bonifacio, Global City, Rizal Monument and El Nido Limestone Cliffs
Singapore:Singapore has celebrated Earth Hour with an outdoor concert hosted by local celebrities in Esplanade Park, powered with bio-diesel made from waste cooking oil. Thirty Four icons will turn off their lights in Singapore as the global relay of hope and positive action sweeps through.
Hanoi, Vietnam:Miss Vietnam, Huong Giang, led a host of celebrity Ambassadors in Vietnam encouraging people to switch off their lights and consider what they could do as an individual to help create a more sustainable future. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City were among the cities leading the way on climate change in Vietnam.
Phnom Penh, Cambodia:The Princess of Cambodia, Sita Norodom, is among some of the worlds leading ladies supporting Earth Hour this year. The iconic Raffles Hotel le Royal, Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor offered guests and patrons candle-lit cocktails in their fine dining restaurants to inspire guests to consider the simple actions they could take to lower their carbon emissions around the house and at work.
Bangkok, Thailand:Bangkok, Khon Kaen and Chiang Mai lead Thailand into Earth Hour as thousands of people across the country marked the special hour for a better, healthier world. Important icons that went dark for Earth Hour included the magnificent Grand Palace in Bangkok, and Wad Arun Buddhist temple.
